Why This Site Exists

IMHA Toolkit was created to make information about Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA) easier to access, understand and apply.

IMHA is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease affecting dogs and, less commonly, cats. Although considerable research and clinical guidance exist, important information is often scattered across scientific papers, conference proceedings, textbooks and specialist resources. This can make it difficult for both veterinary professionals and pet owners to quickly locate reliable information when it is needed most.

The aim of IMHA Toolkit is to bring together key information, clinical references, educational resources and practical tools in one place. The site is intended to support understanding of IMHA, thrombosis risk, treatment protocols and patient monitoring, while encouraging readers to consult the original literature and seek appropriate professional advice.

The Story Behind IMHA Toolkit

The inspiration for this project was Luna.

Luna was a much-loved rescue dog who became seriously ill with Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia in 2025. During her treatment, her family spent countless hours researching the disease, reading veterinary literature and trying to understand the rapidly evolving evidence surrounding IMHA and its complications.

Although Luna initially responded well to treatment, she later suffered catastrophic thromboembolic disease and died unexpectedly.

In the months that followed, a detailed review of the available veterinary literature revealed the significant role that thrombosis plays in IMHA outcomes and highlighted how challenging it can be for owners—and sometimes even clinicians—to access relevant information quickly.

IMHA Toolkit was created in Luna’s memory with the hope that bringing together educational resources, research findings and practical tools may help others facing the same diagnosis.

Editorial Oversight

IMHA Toolkit is independently researched, written and edited by John Tosh.

John is not a veterinary surgeon.

He is a UK-based researcher, digital publisher and content creator who developed the site following Luna’s illness and the extensive literature review that followed. His role is to collect, organise and present information from published sources in a format that is accessible to veterinary professionals and pet owners.

The site does not claim to establish new clinical guidance or replace professional veterinary judgement. Its purpose is educational and informational.
